Many of our clients ask us how to register for a CRA account. We’ve outlined the process below.
CRA’s My Account is a secure portal for viewing and managing your income tax information online. You can check for your refund, check benefits and credit payments, and more. There are 2 ways to register, however, you must have filed an income tax return of the current tax year or the previous one.
- Sign-In Partners (financial institutions using same sign-in for online banking)
or
- Using CRA user ID and password
To register for a CRA user ID and password for My Account or My Business Account, you will need the following information:
- Social insurance number
- Business Number (if applicable)
- Date of birth
- Postal code
- Latest tax return
We suggest you create a unique and strong password. We don’t recommend using a password that you already have in use on other accounts.
Once this is all done, the CRA will mail a security code to your address. This will take approximately 1-2 weeks to receive. Once you have the security code, you can login to gain full access.
If you are an individual taxpayer, you will need to register for My Account.
If you are a business owner, you will need to register for My Business Account.
IFC will send an authorization request for you to grant us access to your CRA account (for both individual and business accounts). You may see this as pending in your CRA account. Please select the pending request to confirm access. This will grant access for IFC to view and update your information with the CRA.
Protect your accounts
The CRA put measures in place to protect your personal information. This includes providing an email address upon registration. Be sure to provide an email that you check on a regular basis and to sign up to receive email notifications to monitor changes to your CRA accounts.
From either My Account or My Business Account, you can also clean up individuals and remove those who no longer require access to your CRA accounts.
If your account has been compromised, check the Security of your CRA My Account and My Business Account page for more information on what to do next.
