It’s important to know who has access to your CRA account. For example, if you’ve had your taxes filed by a tax professional in previous years, you may have added them as a representative at the time of your tax preparation so that they could make inquiries with the CRA on your behalf.
Depending on the level of access granted, a representative can access and/or update a wide range of information like your personal tax information, business tax accounts, and trust accounts.
You can appoint anyone to be your representative – a friend, family member, lawyer, bookkeeper, accountant, etc.
Depending whether it’s a personal or business account, the list of services available to a representative are different. If you do not specify a level of authorization, the CRA will automatically grant level 1 access only.
Personal Tax Account
There are 2 levels of access available on personal accounts:
- Get information only (level 1)
- Request limited changes and get information only (level 2)
This is a great chart that outlines the list of services available to a representative on behalf of an individual at each level.
Business Tax Account
There are 3 levels of access available on business accounts:
- Get information only (level 1)
- Update and get information (level 2)
- Delegate authority, update and get information (level 3)
Be aware that your authorization remains in effect until you or your representative cancel or it reaches the expiry date you choose.
If you’re an Insightful Financial Connections client, you may want us to make inquiries to the CRA about your tax account. In order for us to do so, you must first confirm us as a new representative to your account.
Follow these instructions should you need to cancel the authorization of representatives from your accounts.
